Colombia is well positioned to comply with the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), thanks to its strong traceability systems and the efforts of the country's coffee sector. The regulation requires coffee imported into the EU to be proven free from deforestation after 2020, placing greater emphasis on transparency throughout the supply chain.
Despite this advantage, the industry still faces challenges. Many smallholder farmers will need additional support to meet the new requirements for geolocation, documentation, and due diligence. While the regulation presents an opportunity to strengthen the global reputation of Colombian coffee as a sustainable product, it may also increase compliance costs and create barriers for producers with limited resources.
Overall, the EUDR is expected to reshape the global coffee trade, rewarding producers and exporters that can demonstrate responsible sourcing and full supply chain transparency.
